Grossly overplayed songs
I have a list which I call the Ten Year Banned Song List. It consists of songs (and sometimes whole bands, or large selections of such) that I’m so sick and tired of hearing played on the radio that I will immediately change the station faster than if rap music made an ugly appearance. After about ten years, if the song is sufficiently cleared out of my head, I may try to “rediscover” the tune. Meaning: reattach it to a significant event or period in my life so I can derive enjoyment out of it again.
For the record I have very variable musical tastes. My normal fare is classic and alternative rock, dating from the 60’s and 70’s all the way up until now. I can tolerate country for a while, depending on the artists (forced to because of Yes Dear’s and PBJ’s tastes), and I like soft jazz, depending on my mood at the time. I grew up in the heavy metal/hard rock era, so there’s a lot there that I like (though some of it is now starting to strike me as noise, going on 40). Grunge is hit-and-miss with me. Today’s pop music is more miss than hit with me, and I think I made my point clear with rap music earlier. And yet there are some bands where I fall in love with a single tune or two of theirs (Coldplay’s Clocks and Yellow are good examples) but I regard everything else they put out as crap.
My problem is that too many classic rock stations seem to recycle the same old bands and songs over and over again ad nauseum. All they play is PinkFloydLedZeppelinTheDoorsTheRollingStonesBostonTheWhoetcetcetc. Nothing wrong with the above bands, but all of them have numerous selections that have made my list. Pink Floyd and Boston are probably the worst offenders, I think my top two songs on the list are Comfortably Numb and More Than A Feeling. There is such a station here in Atlanta that even though their playlist has dramatically expanded the past year, an hour can’t go by without a Boston tune. I do like hearing deep tracks from old classic rock bands, with the occasional well-known tune, but it’s harder and harder to find a radio station that will play those.
There is a station I used to listen to in my California days that probably had the best mix of music that I enjoy listening to. I was overjoyed to discover that I could still listen to them over the ‘net, way out here in Jaw-ja. You can go listen to them too at http://www.kfog.com. They mix it up with modern rock tracks, classic rock, alternative, grunge, some of the more popular metal tunes, classic deep tracks, and even some contemporary blues. I have yet to discover any other station that can mix it up like KFOG can and always keep it fresh.
Anybody out there have a similar list?

too many songs get overplayed. I used to like Coldplay, but cannot stomach any of their songs at all, and had to remove them from my iPod.
I can’t get enough Floyd. But, at the Roger Water’s concert last year, I could have done without his liberal talk between songs.
I have been stuck in a rut of listening to the same band’s music over and over and over for several months now. Husband and kid are sick of it, but I can’t get enough.
I don’t listen to the radio much anymore. It’s iTunes all the time. iPod in the car, iPod at work, AppleTV at home.
We used to have satellite radio, and I enjoyed the variety of music available. But that was one of the first luxuries to go in our budget cuts.
I don’t have a list, just one song.
99 Red Balloons – Nena
Ugh, makes me shudder just typing it.
Funny you should mention Boston. When I lived in Tulsa you could hear the entire first Boston album during your drive to/from work. They just couldn’t get enough Boston. I used to like them, but they are on my Ten Year Ban list.
Then a friend of mine get an iPod for Christmas and wanted me to load it up with 70s rock songs. I put the first two Boston albumns on it. It about killed me to do so. But then again, this guy graduated high school in Boston in 1980. It brings back fun memories for him.
I almost never listen to Classic Rock anymore. iTunes all the way. I pick the damn songs!
Ah! Excellent. KGON here in Portland, they can’t get enough Boston either. Maybe they and the Tulsa station should date (unless they are already owned by the same company).
The sad thing is is that all of these Ledzeppelinfloydbostonetc songs are really good songs, but they are so overplayed that I have to get up and plug in the iPod.
