Been offered a temp-to-perm fulltime job, starting Monday. Working nights (again). Pay is somewhat less than where I was previously, but still above my minimum for survival. Better yet, it sounds like a full 40hr/wk job as opposed to the 38/wk I was doing, which really makes a difference when you do the math.
I would like to say that I’m enthusiastic and probably should be, but the truth is that it’s another manufacturing/factory grind. This time it’s going to be in a building without any climate control, which is going to be fun. Thank goodness summer is winding down, I can deal with cold much better than heat. Not to mention I’m just tired of doing factory work and dealing with the associated BS, and figure that the flavor may be different but the management games will likely be the same as before. I’m still pursuing my school ambitions and hopefully will be able to get in somewhere for the spring semester.
But the timing here is fortuitous. Long story short, unemployment is playing games and I didn’t get anything from them last week, and probably won’t this week as well. Without substantial steady income, this already listing ship is going to go belly up and we’re all going to be stuck inside singing “The Morning After” and watching fat old ladies pretend to be mermaids.*
So hopefully this new job will at least let me sustain the family for a little while and allow me to work my way up the educational ladder a little bit so I can someday escape factory work. The good part is if I can make it with them 60 days through the temp agency they’ll bring me on fulltime, which should mean a substantial raise. Also they’re a union job which, although I’m not a big fan of unions, would mean I may have a little more compensation and benefits than some other employers.
Wish me luck.
And never forget what tomorrow’s date is, and what it represents.
