Ah, the good old reliable meme.  Just what I need when I get too lazy to actually sit down and pound out a coherent post.  Nothing fancy here, just something to reveal a little more about myself.

Swiped from here.

1. Book or movie and why?

Hmmm.  Think I’m leaning more and more towards books the older I get.  I tend to jump around in books, often referring back to previous pages or chapters to clarify something I may have missed or am having trouble understanding.  More difficult to do that with movies, even in the age of DVD and DVR.  Also, books are able to go into finer detail than movies, and still come across as realistic (or surrealistic).  Furthermore, I tend to contort into strange positions for comfort while reading, something more difficult to do while watching a movie.

2. Real book or e-book?

I still prefer the traditional hardback or paperback book for fiction stories by my favorite authors (Stephen King, Tom Clancy, Jeff Shaara, etc.), or any book with lots of illustrations.  But I’m starting to get into e-books for certain nonfiction genres like historical analyses or essays.  Don’t have a Kindle or any plans to get one, since Kindle for PC works perfectly well on my laptop.  I see e-books as a supplement to my normal reading, but not something that’ll ever completely replace hardbooks, mainly because I’m afraid of my hard drive or account getting screwed up to the point where I can no longer access my e-book and have to repurchase, much like losing your DRM licenses to your downloaded music favorites.  Then again, hardbooks can become lost or worn to the point of being unusable, or have something spilled on them, so I guess it all evens out.

3. Funniest thing you’ve done in the last 5 years?

Have to go past five years to the funniest thing I’ve ever done, which was slipping on a banana peel back in high school.  More recently?  A couple years ago I managed to completely blow out the seat of my pants at work.  Being relatively new on the job and not having any vacation time, not to mention having a 45 min commute, going home to change was not an option, not with 8 hours left in my shift.  So I just untucked my shirt and let it hang as low as possible, and made it a point to either sit or have my backside as close to the wall as possible the rest of the day.  Nobody said anything, possibly out of pity.  Of course, much funnier to share now than it was at the time.

4. Do you put yourself into the books you read/write or the movies you watch?

The beauty of reading is that, without any visual cues, we can subconsciously create the scenes in our mind and let our imaginations fill in the blanks.  When I’m able to do that, then I know I’m hooked into a book.  Much harder to do that with movies, where everything is visually laid out, unless there is a scene dealing with a situation that I’ve found myself in before.

5. How would your best friend describe you?

My best friend, who I occasionally correspond with via FB but haven’t seen in person in better than fifteen years (yes, I miss him), once referred to me as “a diamond in the rough”.  I took that, and still do, to mean that fundamentally I’m a pretty good person at the core, but I need a lot of polishing and buffing for that good to show through.  That polishing and buffing is what I call my journey through life.

6. Favorite kind of car and why?

Being a man of simple tastes, as a teenager I eschewed the really exotic cars that everybody else dreamed of like the Lamborghinis and Ferraris for the more pedestrian Porsche 944.  Compact, good looking, quick, great handling, and a chick magnet.  What could be more important to a 16-17 YO growing up in the mid-eighties?  No, I never got close to owning one but had a really nice poster of one adorning my bedroom.  But a couple years later, I discovered the REAL love of my life:

The Buick Grand National GNX.  Basically an old Buick Regal with the 3.8 V6 Gutless Cutlass engine gussied up with a turbocharger and a cool black paint job.  When initially unveiled, it was blowing Corvettes off the road. Having a sort of fetish now for old man cars with lots of power under the hood, this one fits me nicely.

7. Would your choice of party be a catered meal or barbecue out back?

My heart would choose a barbecue out back.  Has that down-home informal ambience of friends and family getting together, and probably a little tastier.  But my brain just might vote for a catered meal, despite the expense, because I’m lazy and if I had the money I just might pay someone else to do the work.

8. What’s your favorite season and why?

I would have to choose the fall.  Something about the breaking of the summer heat, and the transition into the cooler days and evenings, not to mention the trees shedding their leaves and the changing of colors, always made me feel good.  I also like the coming of spring, though the associated pollen and allergy season pretty firmly regulates it to second place.

9. What specific lesson have you learned – Spiritual, educational, occupational?

Probably that in the grand scheme of things that I myself don’t matter very much.  What does matter is what I can do for others in the world around me, and what kind of difference I can make in their lives.  That is where true happiness comes from, the kind that we were meant to seek out when we were put upon this earth.

10. Besides writing, what’s your favorite thing to do when you get some extra time?

Reading or playing addictive computer games.  Really need to concentrate more on the former.

11. What’s one place you can be found at least one time every week?

Y’know, I need to find a place like that, other than work, in bed, or in front of the computer.  My crazy work schedule has taken so much out of me that it’s rare that I find myself anyplace other than the aforementioned these days.

Consider yourself tagged if you’re reading this and made it this far.  Or don’t.  Your choice.

The Dinosaur Times

Been so lazy (and snowed in just makes me lazier) I thought about just filling in with another Musical Interlude.  But this time I decided to do something different.  I decided to create my own band, complete with first album cover.

Here’s how I did it:

1 – Go to wikipedia and hit “random article”.  The first random wikipedia article you get is the name of your band.

2 – Go to and hit “random quotes”.  The last four or five words of the very last quote of the page is the title of your first album.

3 – Go to flickr and click on “explore the last seven days”. Third picture, no matter what it is, will be your album cover.

4 – Use photoshop or similar ( is a free online photo editor) to put it all together:

So here’s But Rather By Your Friends, the debut album by The Dinosaur Times:

(hat tip to Brokedown Palace)

The Name Game

I need to keep SOME things private (though you probably know 2/3 of it).

2. WITNESS PROTECTION NAME (mother and father’s middle names)
Miles Lee.  (pretty good)

3. NASCAR NAME (first name of your mother’s dad; father’s dad)
James Elmer. (even better)

4. STAR WARS NAME (the first three letters of your last name, first two letters of your first name)
Ferda (Ehhh…I guess so)

5. DETECTIVE NAME (favorite color, favorite animal)
Blue Orangutan (never work, suspects would laugh themselves to death)

6. SOAP OPERA NAME (middle name, town where you were born)
David Hurricane (think this should be entered below instead)

7. SUPERHERO NAME (second fav color, fav drink, add ‘the’ to the beginning)
The Red Pepsi (picture that logo on the front of my uniform)

8. FLY NAME (first two letters of your first name, last two letters of your last name)
Jall (fly name?  What the hell is that?)

9. ROCK STAR NAME (current pet’s name, current street name)

10. PORN NAME (first pet, street you grew up on)
Buck Melrose (hey, that sounds good)

11. GANGSTA NAME (first three letters of your real name, plus izzle)

12. IRAQI NAME (second letter of your first name, 3rd letter of your last name, first two letters of your middle name, last two letters of your first name, then last three letters of your last name)
Ardaesell (hoo…kay…)

13. GOTH NAME (black, and the name of one of your pets)
Black Ne-hi (sounds like a 200 proof soft drink)

14. STRIPPER NAME (favorite perfume, favorite candy)
Old Spice Nestle Crunch (God, that sounded horrible.  Cue mass exodus of people screaming into the streets)

Any takers, post on your own blog and comment here that you did so.  If no blog, just post in the comments.

Heart Shaped World

Found this one floating around out there.  Anybody that stops by should give it a try and tell me in your comments that you did it, so I can come by and take a peek.

What does your music library say about you?

1. Put your media player of choice Shuffle (ipod, Windows Media Player, whatever)
2. For each question, press the next button to get your answer.
3. You must write down the name of the song no matter how silly it sounds!
4. Put any comments in parentheses after the song name.
5. Tag at least 10 friends (or just do like I do and tag whoever comes by).

Also, you’re supposed to use the answer to the last question as your title.

What do your friends think of you?
Nobody’s Fault But Mine – Led Zeppelin (Yep, the name of the game was always Dave did it.)

If someone says, “Is this okay?” You say?
If You Love Somebody Set Them Free – Sting (and if it don’t come back, kill it!)

How would you describe yourself?
Learning To Fly – Pink Floyd (Uncannily accurate.)

What do you like in a girl?
Remedy – The Black Crowes (I have a bad habit of wanting others to fix me as opposed to doing it myself.)

How do you feel today?
Was I Right Or Wrong – Lynyrd Skynyrd (Should I have left my previous job even though it’d be a 1 1/2hr commute one way?  Should I have found a way to stay in Texas longer?  Should I have eaten those four breakfast burritos?)

What is your life’s purpose?
Runaway Train – Soul Asylum (Wheeee!)

What is your motto?
I’m Alright – Kenny Loggins (That’s what I tell everybody)

What do you think about very often?
You Oughta Know – Alanis Morisette (I’m a guy…and most of my readers are female…what do you think?)

What do you think of your best friend?
I Still Believe – The Call (I sure do.  Even when I figured out you were full of shit half the time, I still believe.  As long as we can have fun together. )

What do you think of the person you like?
We Just Disagree – Dave Mason (Another one that hits too close to home.)

What is your life story?
The Devil Went Down To Georgia – The Charlie Daniels Band (Twice – once when I was five, and again when I was 28.)

What do you want to be when you grow up?
Alive – Pearl Jam (Doesn’t everybody?)

What do you think of when you see the person you like/love?
All Over The World – ELO (Hell, I don’t know – but it’s a good song and it makes me feel good, so it’ll do.)

What will you dance to at your wedding?
Seeing Things – The Black Crowes (I’m already married – second honeymoon, perhaps?)

What will they play at your funeral?
Big Empty – Stone Temple Pilots (I think that says it all.)

What is your hobby/interest?
I’m The Only One – Melissa Etheridge (Yep – I tend to be me-centered with my pursuits – just kidding.  I had to put down something, y’know?)

What is your biggest fear?
When The Spell Is Broken – Bonnie Raitt (Finding out that it ain’t real, it was all just a fantasy.  Very frightening prospect.)

What is your biggest secret?
Soul Sacrifice – Santana (I’ll do just that before I’ll tell.)

What do you think of your friends?
Dirty Juice – Big Head Todd & The Monsters (Yeah, I used to partake of the dirty juice too.  Now look at me.)

What will you post this as?
Heart Shaped World – Chris Isaak (Don’t know why, but it’d make a good title.)

Actually a couple of times I did reshuffle when my answers came back totally nonsensical.  But do the best you can.

Interestingly enough, my wife did this one as well and most of her answers came back with Ray Stevens as the artist.  Go figure.
Tag, you’re it.

I’m working on better things, but in the meantime…

I got a silly little meme here. The Fives Meme (in case anyone hasn’t done it).

The rules:

1. Post the rules of the game at the beginning.
2. Each player answers the questions about themselves.
3. At the end of the post, the player then tags five people and posts their names, then goes to their blogs and leaves them a comment, letting them know they’ve been tagged and asking them to read the player’s blog.
4. Let the person who tagged you know when you’ve posted your answer.

What were you doing five years ago?

Going on vacation to see my mom, and trying to deal with the fallout of a nuclear bomb that exploded right in the middle of my family. Honestly, it wasn’t happy times.

What are five things on your to-do list for today?

1) Feed the dog.
2) Catch up on some blogging.
3) Straighten the kitchen. It’s so hot outside, the ants are coming in. Letting it go a day is no longer an option.
4) Go through my (severely strained) finances.
5) Make it to bed before midnight. I normally get up at five, and I’m not getting enough sleep lately.

What are five snacks you enjoy?

1) Pizza breadsticks from Quiktrip.
2) Ice cream. Moose tracks or German chocolate cake my favorites.
3) Peanut butter on saltines.
4) Chex mix (or trail mix).
5) Assorted nuts (but they give me too much gas).

What are five things you would do if you were a billionaire?

1) Tithe my ten percent. Actually make it twenty, to make up for all the times I didn’t.
2) Go up north, maybe to Montana, maybe as far as Canada, and buy a house with lots of land.
3) Get out of debt.
4) Take my family, including mom and stepmom, on a cruise.
5) Invest the rest so I can live off the interest and never work again.

What are five of your bad habits?

1) Nail-biting.
2) Procrastination.
3) Overeating and under-exercising.
4) Not following through on my ideas.
5) Beating myself over the head for past, present, and future mistakes.

What are five places where you have lived?

1) Charleston, WVa.
2) Torrance, CA
3) Santa Cruz, CA
4) Hayward, CA
5) Atlanta, GA

What are five jobs you’ve had?

1) working in an insurance office
2) cabinet maker
3) retailing in large electronics store
4) selling life insurance
5) printer

Five people I tag:

1) Boudicca, because I have to start somewhere
2) Lukie, because she may actually do it
3) WB, because she might do it, too
4) Mrs. Who, cause I need five and only have three so far
5) Nathan, because I don’t hear from him much
(Helen, if you’re reading this, I omitted you because your plate is full right now and I didn’t think you did memes, your blog is great without them. But if you feel left out, feel free to join.)
